Tulum, Mexico

Tulum, Mexico is a popular tourist destination. Known for its ancient Mayan ruins, Tulum boasts an incredible sense of history, spectacular scenery and amazing opportunities for sightseeing and snorkeling.

Tulum is located on the Yucatan Peninsula. It's situated on a majestic bluff facing the Caribbean Sea. While the bluff protected the ancient city on one side, an impressive 16-foot-tall-wall secured the other side. In fact, "Tulum" is the Mayan word for "wall." This beautiful walled city was an important trade center between the 13th and 15th centuries when Tulum was at its peak.

The Mayan pole dancers put on stunning performances throughout the day. These talented performers dress in traditional attire and climb a large pole. Once at the top, one of them dances and plays the flute while the others four dancers loop a rope around one of their feet and fling themselves off of the pole. They gracefully circle the pole as they swing from the rope. The performers work for tips, which most people are happy to provide.
