Denver, Colorado

Denver is the largest city in the state of Colorado, and is also the state’s capital. It is located next to the Rocky Mountains, meaning it is at a high elevation. In fact, the city’s nickname is the “Mile High City” in reference to the elevation which is almost exactly one mile above sea level. The city itself is home to over 600,000 people, while more than 3 million inhabitants call the metropolitan area their home. Denver looks to both its past as a mining city with a cowboy culture, and to the vibrant future which is causing a population boom and a growth in tourism. Only a short drive to the base of the Rockies, it is a popular choice for travelers who want to experience a cultural center as well as incredible natural scenery in one location.

Denver Skyline at NightThe city of Denver was created initially as a mining town, in 1858. The site was originally called Montana City, and later Auraria. In the following year the name was changed to Denver in honor of the territory’s governor, James W. Denver. The town began to develop as a quintessential frontier town. The purpose was essentially to provide miners with places to stock up on goods, socialize, drink and gamble. In 1863, the town was chosen as a regional stop for Western Union, truly putting it on the map for the first time. From that time it has grown to become one of the larger cities in the Western United States.

Denver’s economy has larger been based on it’s location. As the only major urban area in the region, it makes an ideal transport hub for the mountain states. Many logistics and shipping companies use the ideally located Denver as headquarters. Mining continues to be an industry in the area, and Colorado as a whole has gained notoriety for it’s breweries and local beer production. The area enjoys one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation, and is on the whole a successful and welcoming city where the general population is quite happy.

For many travelers, Denver brings to mind an eco-friendly atmosphere and an active population. This is certainly the truth, as the area is full of open green spaces, and many residents head to the nearby Rockies for skiing and hiking. Outdoor dining and festivals are incredible popular, and the green public spaces like City Park and Denver Botanic Gardens are popular meeting places for locals and visitors alike.
