Cape Florida State Park is a very picturesque beach at the southern tip of Key Biscayne. First discovered by Ponce de Leon while on a Spanish expedition to the new world in 1513, proclaimed this spit of land as “Cape of Florida” , for years after its discovery, Cape Florida was known for many shipwrecks and violent storms in the uncharted waters surrounding the cape. In 1821 with Florida becoming a territory of the United States, one of the first action by the Government was to construct a lighthouse. Today Cape Florida State Park is home to Florida’s oldest structure, Cape Florida State Park Lighthouse was constructed in 1835.
