Cape Florida State Park is a very picturesque beach at the southern tip of Key Biscayne. First discovered by Ponce de Leon while on a Spanish expedition to the new world in 1513, proclaimed this spit of land as “Cape of Florida” , for years after its discovery, Cape Florida was known for many shipwrecks and violent storms in the uncharted waters surrounding the cape. In 1821 with Florida becoming a territory of the United States, one of the first action by the Government was to construct a lighthouse. Today Cape Florida State Park is home to Florida’s oldest structure, Cape Florida State Park Lighthouse was constructed in 1835.
Cape Florida State Park has taken on the name of Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Area, named after Bill Baggs, late editor of The Miami News newspaper a major opponent against development of the island. After hurricane Andrew devastated the area in 1992, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Area has been going through a restoration program to restore natural vegetation to the island. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Area is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east providing over a mile of white sand beaches, to the west are the protected waters of Biscayne Bay.
Today the park offers visitors the natural beauty of the area.
